Get together any random group of gamers and ask them which of the three consoles will win in the next generation and it's a guarantee that you'll get three different answers. So it's always fun when we get predictions from people who are a little bit more in-the-know, as is the case with Analyst Jason Anderson.
At the MI6 Game Marketing Conference (where Will Wright received a hall of fame award), Anderson laid out his predictions for next-gen dominance. He predicts that, assumedly largely because of its early release, the Xbox 360 will be the leader for a couple more years. He says that by 2009, however, that the PS3 will overtake the 360 in the "installed base race", leading to Sony winning the battle overall.Anderson predicts that the Wii, much like the Gamecube, will follow in a sluggish but respectable 3rd place. Essentially what he said was that the race will be between PS3 and Xbox 360, and that some from both sides will just pick up a Wii on the side.
I think if we see a price drop or two by 2009 for the PS3, Anderson's predictions will be correct. After all, if you have any faith in brand loyalty, Sony's already got millions of devotees more than Nintendo or Microsoft. However, if the Wii happens to drop in price over the next couple years too, the impulse purchase ability for that console could nudge it above the somewhat low expectations laid by Anderson.
