There has recently been a huge influx of mobile speaker solutions called capsule speakers. Capsule speakers are small enclosures with the promise of greatly improved sound over your standard phone, laptop or mobile device. We recently reviewed the X-Mini Uno Capsule Speaker and really liked the sound quality and design. The only thing apparently holding the X-Mini Uno back from a perfect 5 was the price and a short connection cable. The Kinivo comes in at a price of $18.99 so there is one problem solved. The connection cable is still very short. Will the price difference push the Kinivo to the top of the pack? Read on to find out.

Main Features and Specifications:

  • ERCD - Expansive Resonator Construction Design to give the best low frequency output
  • Full-bodied, 360-degree sound
  • Compatible with any device with standard 3.5mm headphone jack
  • Modular design allows for multiple speakers to be connected
  • Built-In extended life rechargeable battery

What We Liked:

    • Price: One of the things we didn't like about the aforementioned X-Mini Uno was the price. The Kinivo drastically undercuts the price of the X-Mini. At $18.99 this is one of the lowest prices on any capsule speaker available in the market. There was some initial concern about the quality of the device, but after unpacking and from everything we can tell through testing and use, the ZX100 is well built and should provide good quality listening for quite a while. And to ease any other concerns, Kinivo includes a 1-year warranty.

    • Portability/Battery Life: We were unable to find any claims on expected battery life either on the box or the provided product documentation; However the Kinivo performed well during testing. If we were asked to provide an estimate for battery life, we would say around 6-9 hours is not unrealistic on medium volume. In addition, it only takes about two hours to fully recharge.

  • Design: The Kinivo ZX100 just looks cool. The black and satin red color scheme complement each other and provide a very good-looking device. Spinning the top part of the device opens the expansion port. This allows for greater bass resonation. The ZX100 is made of soft plastics and feels very good in your hand. It doesn't feel quite as weighty as the X-Mini Uno, but solid construction nonetheless.

What We Didn't Like:

    • Sound Quality: The unfortunate situation for the Kinivo is that it arrived the same time as the X-Mini. The sound quality of the Kinivo is not bad. In fact, for the price, it's quite good. But it does not sound nearly as good as the X-Mini Uno. It lacks the punch of the Uno and the sound becomes distorted at higher volumes. The X-Mini does not suffer as much from high volume distortion problems.

    • Operation/Functionality: The Kinivo is operated by pressing or holding the buttons built into the design. The red colored stripe around the device has buttons built into three of the four feet. The labels for those buttons are in the black structure above. Even after knowing how the device worked wrong presses of the black labels continued. Powering on the device is performed by holding the red stripe under the power label for approximately three seconds. The buttons seem to work just fine, but we question how well they will hold up.

  • Connections: Just like the X-Mini Uno, the attached audio connection cable is incredibly short in length. Both devices include a USB charge cable that also doubles as a longer audio connection cable, but most people will not always have that cable with them and it is just so much easier to use the attached cable on the bottom.

Our Verdict:

For years past, people had to deal with poor quality mobile speaker solutions. Capsule Speakers are a great option for those looking for a little bit more oomph for their sound. The Kinivo ZX100 is a great value for those just trying to add a bit of volume to their system. The battery holds charge well and the device overall performs well. Sound quality isn't quite up to par to other devices we have tested, but a lower entry price makes a great argument. For audiophiles, the Kinivo may not be the best choice. For our money, the Kinivo ZX100 is a good value buy.

Our Score: 4 out of 5
