Time left: 12310 days

This is definitely one of those products that we couldn't have even imagined needing 10 years ago; after all, who was streaming music wirelessly, much less from a smartphone? Nevertheless, now that we're in the year 2011, there is the interesting quandary about how to get music off of our portable devices with their associated earbuds and into the room. The common solution to this seems to be the ubiquitous docking station, ranging from clock radio form factor, all the way up to (near) audiophile multispeaker system. These are great if you have an Apple device, otherwise you're looking at a wired audio-only connection. Enter the SuperTooth Disco with A2DP Bluetooth streaming capability AND a wired audio-only connection for your vintage Walkman!

  • Two way bi-amplified design with 28 watts (12 watts subwoofer, 8 watts left/right speakers)
  • Wireless A2DP capability
  • Headphone jack
  • External input jack
  • Volume, subwoofer on/off, and transport controls on front panel
  • Internal rechargeable batteries (NIMH)
  • Neoprene carrying case
  • Long (3-10 hour depending on volume) battery life

What We Liked

    • The Cool Factor: This box fills a real need for users with smartphones (or Apple IOS phones), and other bluetooth 2.0 A2DP devices allowing them to liberate their music without the need for wires.

    • Pump Up the Volume!: This thing is LOUD, and when we say LOUD we mean LOUD!!! You can easily fill a normal sized room with sound.

    • Battery Life: We were pretty much floored just how long the Supertooth Disco would run on a single battery charge. At low volume we found that the battery would last even longer than the claimed 10 hours.

    • Travel Case: What is it with manufacturers that don't include a case for devices that are obviously made to be portable? In any event, SuperTooth has included a very nice form fitting padded neoprene case that is perfect for taking the Disco on the road with you.

    • Excellent Compatibility With Various A2DP Devices: The Disco had no problem connecting to three different Android phones (and it can pair with multiple Bluetooth devices) and (visiting) iPhone.

    • Wired Input: Got an old Walkman? Use the included 1/8 stereo cable to connect it directly to the Supertooth and enjoy all your old media again!

    • Front Panel Transport Controls: Start, stop, and ff/rw through your music collection without needing to touch your phone (or other device).

  • On/Off Control For Subwoofer: If you don't need it (for quiet listening sessions) you can extend battery life by turning it off.

What We Didn't Like

    • Audio Quality: Unfortunately the audio quality of the SuperTooth Disco is its achilles heel. It is harsh and shrill in character. Some devices entice you to turn the volume up; this is one that begs you to turn it down, which is really a shame because it does have quite the output capabilty. We would describe the Disco as having the Bose sound, but without the clarity.

    • High Pitched Whine From the AC Converter: The AC converter (when it is plugged into the SuperTooth Disco emits a high pitched (8 kHZ) whine that is more than loud enough to be really annoying. When the SuperTooth is charging, you're going to want to put it in an unused room.

  • No Tone Controls: If the Disco had even rudimentary tone controls one could smooth out the overly bright high end and better integrate the subwoofer's response.

Our Verdict:

We really wanted to like the Disco, it's a great concept, has plenty of power, excellent battery life, reasonable price (about $125 street) and it worked without a hiccup during the testing period. Ultimately though, its harsh audio quality let it down. We look forward to seeing the next iteration of the product, hopefully with a user adjustable tonal balance.

Our Score: 3 out of 5
