Eye-Fi Mobi 8GB SD Card Review
Time left: 12178 days

The Mobi Wi-Fi SD Card by Eye-Fi is a socially-geared consumer product, as it has a built-in Wi-Fi system for sharing photos. It has a sister app on iOS and Android that it links to in order to easily share and save photos as they're taken. Not only that, but the instant transfer means potentially infinite space, despite this particular version being 8GB (16GB and 32GB cards exists as well). Cool features aside, it's time to see how this card stacks up.

  • 8GB capacity (16GB and 32GB models available)
  • Class 10
  • Built-in Wi-Fi w/ unique SSID
  • Instant (and automatic) photo transfers
  • $50 MSRP ($40 street)
  • 1-year warranty

What We Liked:

    • Less Space Headaches: With the Mobi's built-in Wi-Fi sending every picture you take to your linked mobile device, you can snap away to your heart's content. If the Eye-Fi card fills up, just delete the pictures on the card knowing you've already backed them up to a mobile device. While you can only transfer JPG files over Wi-Fi, we still loved the space the card gave us.

    • Easy Setup: The Mobi's setup is ridiculously easy. It's a standard SD card, which means you just pop it in your camera like any other. However the beauty is in getting the app and card to play nice. On the back of the card's box is a 10-character code. Download the free app to your iOS or Android device, enter the code, and you're done. After setup, we didn't experience any issues, so despite being a simple system, nothing was sacrificed for its simplicity.

    • No Additional Equipment Required: The Mobi has a built-in Wi-Fi system so you don't have to use any sort of network equipment À you connect the card to your smartphone or tablet directly over your device's Wi-Fi radio, and the transfer comes automatically (and fast) as you take pictures with your digital camera.

  • Sharing Photos is a Breeze: Once a photo is taken, sharing a photo is never more than a few taps away. It supports sharing via Facebook, email, and Twitter, in addition to allowing you to print out your pictures or copy them. And because it's still an SD card, you can shove it in your PC and pluck pictures the old fashioned way, after which you're free to do whatever you want with them.

What We Didn't Like:

    • Can't Upload Raw Pictures: We're not trying to hate on JPEG -- it's a friendly format for sharing photos without taking up gobs of space -- we just think it stinks it can't transfer RAW photos. Professional photographers and hobbyists who want to edit their photos will find this card lacking in that regard, as they'll still have to transfer all those RAW photos the old school way.

  • No Native Love for the PC: While the Mobi works on iOS and Android very easily, Windows Phone and Blackberry users are out of luck. However PC users can find an app on the Eye-Fi website that will act just like the iOS and Android versions do. Taking a picture automatically transfers the photo to a specified folder on the hard drive that you can change in-app.

Our Verdict:

The Mobi Wi-Fi 8GB is a card that does what it does well. It's incredibly easy to setup with only an app and a 10-digit barrier between you and photo sharing, it transfers photos quickly and painlessly to mobile devices, and still functions as a regular SD card. On the social side, sharing photos to places like Facebook and Twitter or emailing them to friends and family is never more than a few taps away.

However, there are some caveats that will push away the professional crowd. It's disappointing to see that the Mobi doesn't support RAW files, nor does it natively transfer photos your PC via Wi-Fi unless you download a separate PC app from Eye-Fi's website that approximates the functionality of the mobile phone apps. While those features are available in the Eye-Fi Pro X2, the staggering $100 tag will be a brick-wall barrier for most. That being said, this card is fantastic for the casual user who isn't looking to take professional photos, and finds themselves wanting for both space and easy social integration.

Our Score: 4 out of 5
