If you are trying to figure out what exactly the 3M Digital Media System 710 is by name alone you are probably out of luck. That long and arduous name doesn’t give much of a hint that what you are seeing is a projector with a built-in DVD player and surround sound.

The 710 integrates Vikuiti Super Close Projection and Hollywood Quality Video into a small package. The really cool part is that the 710 can throw an image 60 inches wide from only 30 inches away from the screen or wall. Move the 710 back to 50 inches and you can get a whopping 100 inch image. Unfortunately some of this cool is negated by the fact that the 710 isn’t an HD projector. The maximum resolution that the projector can reach is 1024 x 768. The contrast ratio is 1200:1 and the on-board sound is full Dolby digital 5.1. 3M also built in a media reader so you can look at your photos or movies direct from media cards. I’ll be honest in that I am not really sure about this thing. It carries a price of around $2600 which seems to expensive to me for a non-HD projector. Perhaps this thing is aimed more at a business user needing everything in one tidy package. Home theater buffs can do lots better and the lack of HD quality at that price will rule it out totally for many home theater fans. Story and image via Aving
