New UK law targets mobile phone theft

A new law went into effect over the weekend, and it takes a small measure to hopefully prevent people from stealing cell phones, or at least make it less of a headache trying to get illegitimite fees reversed.

Under the Violent Crime Reduction Act, mobile service providers are required to cancel service on a phone immediately if it is reported to be stolen.The number can be unblocked, but that requires significant identification confirmation. The other half of the new law is just standard anti-grand theft auto and "don't sell alcohol to minors" stuff...
