Sony's VP of advanced technologies Don Eklund made a statement this week about a firmware update for the Sony PS3 that would enhance Blu-ray features.
The future PS3 firmware would make the PS3 compatible with the new Blu-ray Profile 1.1 that has to be supported by new Blu-ray players. It is a nice to hear confirmation that the PS3 is a solid platform that can support such enhancements via software. The highlights of the Blu-ray Profile 1.1 standard are PIP and secondary audio used for interactive audio and commentary. More about the Blu-ray Profile 1.1 can be found on Wikipedia.
There is no release time frame for this major new Sony PS3 firmware update. There are also no Blu-ray Profile 1.1 supporting players on the market yet.
