The OLPC organization announced today that it had received an order for 40,000 laptops with the option to purchase an additional 210,000 units. The order was received from Peru.
Peruvian officials say that the first 40,000 notebooks will be distributed to primary school children in remote and rural one-classroom schools. The distribution of the first 40,000 notebooks is starting now and is expected to be complete in February 2008.
The optional 210,000 unit order would see distribution in all extreme poverty areas of the country. Peru began a trial of the XO notebooks in May of 2007 with 60 XO’s being used in a school in Arahuay. Educators reported seeing results from the use of the laptops the very first week of the program.
