Both cases provide all over protection from rain, dust and drops. OtterBox says the cases are not rated for submersion, but will withstand spills and splashes. The cases are constructed from polycarbonate/ABS with rubber overmolding to provide protection from drops.
Semi-permeable membranes cover the speakers to keep water out, but allow you to hear and be heard. The LCD screen, keyboard, and controls are all covered. The LCD protector flips up to allow access to the screen for use.
