As reported earlier this month on i4u Casio is launching a new color Wrist Camera (WQV3).
Casio's Japanese Web Site has now a product announcement page with new high resolution pictures and detailed specs.

The new WQV3D-8 ($269 suggested retail – metal band) and WQV3-1 ($249 suggested retail – resin band) Wrist Camera models will be available in September in the USA.

I4U reported about the Anoto Pen back in November. Ericsson and Vodaphone have announced now deals with Anoto to bring the Blue Tooth enabled handwriting recording Pen to the market.
The CHA-30 dubbed pen writes like a normal pen but also “reads” its location with the help of an almost invisible dot pattern printed on ordinary paper. This information is sent via Bluetooth and a GPRS mobile phone, letting consumers write on paper and digitally at the same time. Consumers will also find that they are no longer restricted to text-based SMS or e-mail, but can send handwritten notes with Chatpen to anyone with a mobile phone, PC or PDA.

Siemens WristPhone is offering voice dialing, hands-free operation and triple band GSM technology. This prototype mobile phone with an integrated antenna weighs just 36 grams and has a volume of only 28 cm3.
There are no signs that this phone will hit the retail market.

As reported earlier Samsung offers a WristPhone since a while in Korea. Beginning of this year there where reports that the WatchPhone will be offered by SprintPCS in the USA. I dont see any evidence that that has happend. Let us know if somebody got one.

NTT Docomo offers a little device called eggy in japan, which captures digital photos and videos and sends them wireless over 64kbit/s (NTT DoCoMo PHS).
The device also features a built in browser for web surfing. The CCD camera chip has a resolution of 350,000pixel. Eggy also features 192MB of compact flash memory to store images and videos.

Microvision will launch a personal display device based on Retinal-scanning technology this fall.
Retinal-scanning displays had been in research for years. Microvision Nomad is projecting information with a laser on the viewers eye. The experience is basically like what you see when you look through Arnold's eyes in Terminator. This technique is called augmented Reality. The price for a display will be between 8,000 and 10,000USD.

In 2002 Lufthansa in cooparation with Boing is launching high-speed internet access in their flights. Travellers will be able to hook up their notebook over a broadband connection to fully use the internet functionalities they are used to.
The connectivity service is based on the satellite communication system developed by Connexion by Boeing. Last autumn Lufthansa Technik became the world’s first provider to equip a VIP Airbus A340 with a similar system.
Finally i can play Half-life for over 10 hours during the flight from San Francisco to Munich.

Volkswagen is offering the new Golf with HP Jornada 548 PDA and Nokia 6210. The eGeneration Golf allows drivers to check email, surf the web and play MP3 songs. How far the functionalities are integrated in the car is questionable. In germany driving with the cell-phone in the driver's hand is forbidden. I dont think they allow driving with a PDA in your hand.
The car can only be ordered online from the german Volkswagen web site. It retails for 22.449 Euro.

Samsung announced a video on demand (VOD) mobile phone. The Color VOD Phone comes with a 2.04" TFT-LCD that can disply motion picture images in 200,000 different color shades. The handset can send and receive text data wirelessly at up to 144Kbps as well as supports VOD and AOD (Audio on demand).
The handset is based on cdma2000 1x, next-generation wireless technology commercialized in Korea, and comes with a MPEG4 motion picture decoder and stereo player built in.

A new 25,000-pixel (144 x 176 pixels) color CMOS sensor makes it possible to capture up to 80 full digital images that can be transferred to a computer. The watch does not display the pictures taken in color. Only when transferred to the PC the pictures are actually in 16,9Mio. Colors.

6/1/2001 07:07:40 AM Glitches hit Japan's 3G trial and what is 3G anyway about ?

As you know DoCoMo started the first 3G trial with about 3,300 lucky users. The Third-generation mobile phones promise users fast and "always on" access to the internet, e-mail and video streams. Depending on network capacity, they can be up to 40 times faster than current mobile phones.
A report from BBC News describes major glitches with the new service, like the email delivery was down for 18 hours. I am not sure if that makes it any easier for gadget fans in the rest of the world, who have to wait much longer till 3G will be available.

An insight i got from a 3G insider in europe is that 3G is all about business solutions. The killer app is not video streaming or other consumer services, its about connecting devices and infrastructure without having to burry wires all over the place. For instance you can drop a slot machine in the middle of nowhere and remote maintain it over wireless 3G networks. Applications are endless.
