Apple is long rumored to release a cheap iPhone for emerging markets. This rumor is already around since years. Today Digitimes revives this rumor and reports that Apple will release a low-end iPhone in the second half of 2013.
The low-cost iPhone is supposed to have a larger screen than the iPhone 5 following the phablet trend. How low-cost and large screen go together is a mystery to me. The new low-cost iPhone would also have a new design.
I find this rumor not likely to turn out true. What is clear is that Apple has to speed up their game. Samsung is mega successful with their smart phones and phablets. They just posted a 90% revenue gain. Samsung is the largest smartphone maker. Apple needs to accelerate innovation to come out on top of Samsung. With that in mind, I could see Apple releasing a new iPhone in early Summer that might be completely different from the iPhone 5. I do not think it will be low-cost. Apple needs though to attract new customers who are not falling for the clean lines and black brick look of the iPhone 5.
