Sony Xperia Z Ultra makes a surprising debut

Sony ups the ante by launching the 6.4-inch waterproof smartphone that is the Xperia Z Ultra. Yes folks, it is real.

The rumors were spot on. At today's Mobile Asia Expo in Shanghai, Sony officially announced the Xperia Z Ultra.

If you've been following the news, the Xperia Z Ultra was already in the rumor mill for quite a time now, with others saying that it will be a "phablet" of some sort that will go toe-to-toe with Samsung's Galaxy Mega smartphones.

The Sony Xperia Z Ultra sports a gargantuan 6.4-inch display with a 1920 × 1080 resolution. And, much to the delight of many Android fans, it touts Qualcomm's blazing fast Snapdragon 800 processor clocked at 2.2GHz.

Other features include an 8-megapixel camera, a 3000mAh battery, 2GB of RAM, 16GB of storage, and Android 4.2 Jelly Bean. Tipping the scales at 179.4 x 92.2 x 6.5mm, the Sony Xperia Z Ultra will be available in Q3 this year. Pricing has yet to be announced.
