A public health message has been issued by the Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) during the government shutdown. This has taken place with regard to three Foster Farms where poultry was being prepared for market consumption. There have been over 278 cases of food poisoning due to the raw chicken products from these farms. Individuals in 18 states have been the victims of the Salmonella Heidelberg infection.
According to the USDA's public health alert statement, " FSIS is unable to link the illnesses to a specific product and a specific production period. Raw products from the facilities in question bear one of the establishment numbers inside a USDA mark of inspection or elsewhere on the package: “P6137” , “P6137A” , “P7632”
The outbreak is continuing. The investigations indicate that consumption of Foster Farms brand chicken and other brand chicken produced at Foster Farms plants are the likely source of this outbreak of Salmonella Heidelberg infections."
The majority of those infected have their provenance in California, followed by Oregon and Washington. The striking feature of this epidemic of sorts is that it is taking place during a time of governmental shutdown. The two major sites that deal with the nation’s health status are not available or have not been updated respectively.
The selfsame situation exists in the real world, where the staff employed to inspect the infection incidence is barely available. Foster Farms has had a similar outbreak before but it was wisely handled by the government. This time around, however, the responsibility seems to have been shunned by the leadership as government shutdown still continues.
The disease, known as Salmonella poisoning, causes a number of symptoms. These include: diarrhea, acute abdominal pain, emesis and high fever. The bacteria invade your gut and cause these symptoms. Most people recover on their own, within seven days. However, medical intervention and treatment are optimally recommended.
