Samsung Expands Galaxy Gear Compatibility to Older Devices

Update rollout begins today

Samsung has announced that it will be expanding the compatibility of its new Galaxy Gear smart watch. Support for the smart watch will come to the Galaxy S4, Galaxy Note II, and Galaxy S III in the coming weeks. Support will come as part of the Premium Suite software update.

That date is being rolled out with features that vary by carrier and the update begins its rollout today. Exactly when the update lands depends on your device and your carrier. The update will allow the Galaxy Gear smart watch to be used with these three new devices with discrete notifications and support for hands-free calling, music control, and more.

Samsung also announced that the Galaxy S4 mini and the Galaxy Mega will also be receiving the update to support the Galaxy Gear in the coming months. The Galaxy Gear has proven to be relatively unpopular due in part to limited compatibility and the high price of around $299.
