PlayStation 4 teardown is done again. Sony also did official PlayStation 4 teardown. But if you do so, it will void your warranty.
Sony has launched its next generation of PlayStation gaming console after 7 long years. Will this long wait is worthy or not? To find the answer of this question, iFixit has tear into the all new PlayStation 4 console. Sony has also done the official PlayStation 4 teardown a week ago. But the PS4 console is launched today and iFixit teardown will be more detailed and crucial.
What new is added in this next-gen PS4 console in time span of 7 long years? The PS4 design looks more innovative with "more geometric body, an indicator light bar, and more subtle logo labeling than last time round". PS4 has a new slot-loading optical disc drive, 2 powered USB 3.0 ports, and a new HDMI, Dolby, and Blu-ray.
But there is a reported issue with the new HDMI port of PS4. Kotaku reports this issue first. It states that a "piece of metal in the system's HDMI port was supposed to have been flush with the bottom of the port but instead had been bent upward, obstructing some of the pins in the port." This results in preventing some of the PS4s from outputting a video signal to the display. So when you first plug in your HDMI port, be careful. And if you are having some issue, check your HDMI port is not bent or damaged.
Although this teardown is not complete, but it highlights one thing clearly that "Repair is the future. It is your right." Actually, Sony states in its user manual guide: "Unauthorized modification of the system or accessories will void your warranty. There are no user serviceable components inside the PS4 system (the supplied hard disk drive may be removed but not disassembled or modified)." It means that if you tear down your PS4 console, you will void your warranty.
On the other hand, HGST's 5400 RPM, 500 GB, SATA II mechanical hard drive is user-replaceable in PS4. So how can the analysis or modification of the PS4 system or accessories not authorized. And also the unscrewing of PS4 is not that difficult as screws are not thang. These issues will surely affect PS4 repairability score. And one more thing is that the PS4 will not support external USB storage. It means that the device will have limited functionality as a media center.
