If any of us could define some of the early 21st-century video game culture in any one way, then we would probably say it has been the decade of the mash-up.

The developers nowadays seem to be taking old genres and splicing them together in some of their new and interesting ways. Bit nowhere can this be better demonstrated than with the match-three RPG’s. Here is a list of top 5 match-three RPGs available on Android.

  1. 10000000 - Developer: EightyEight Games: In the game 10000000, there is a whole retro RPG-adventure which takes place above the puzzle grid. The neat twist of this game is that the gamer’s actions on the latter - matching weapon symbols for attacks and so on dictate the progress of the gamer’s little hero.
  2. Dungeon Raid - Developer: Fireflame Games: The game Dungeon Raid is just a perfectly streamlined take on the match-three RPG hybrid. The gamers pick their class and they set off towards their inevitable death which just depends on how far their matching skills can carry them. Given its multi-directional matching system, the Dungeon Raid game is most definitely the paciest game on this list.
  3. M&M Clash of Heroes - Developer: Ubisoft Entertainment: This game is arguably the most strategic game on this Top 5 list.  The game Might & Magic Clash of Heroes also sports some of the most unique matching system of the lot. In this game, the gamer is forming individual soldiers into some columns and phalanxes according to their type in order to attack and defend against an opposing army in the game.
  4. Marvel Puzzle Quest Dark Reign - Developer: D3Publisher: The game name might be buried in the middle of an overlong title, but this game is a Puzzle Quest. With Iron Man and the Hulk responding to the gamer’s match-three prompts rather than some po-faced RPG archetypes.
  5. Puzzle Quest 2 - Developer: NAMCO BANDAI Games: The game Puzzle Quest is arguably a game which 'kicked off' this whole match-three RPG craze. And this sequel part is even better than its influential original. Unlike some of the game creators in this genre mash-up, its developer Namco Bandai has not skimped on the RPG systems in this game.
