Octocopter: Drone Deliveries Are the Future of Amazon

Dec 3 2013, 1:11am CST | by , in News | Technology News

The future of Amazon lies in a different direction from the current scenario. Drone deliveries or octocoptors (half-hour shipping) are being looked into with Amazon Prime Air service and they may become standard practice by 2015.

Octocopter: Drone Deliveries Are the Future of Amazon

Amazon Prime Air is the new venture that is being explored at Jeff Bezos’ organization. It consists of delivery of packaged goods by drones to customers’ residential addresses. The service is to be available within a ten mile radius. And it will take a maximum of 30 minutes for conveyance by air. This is the newest creation by Amazon and will likely revolutionize delivery methods. It is valid for stuff that weighs not more than five pounds.

Amazon says that the goal of its new Prime Air delivery system "is to get packages into customers' hands in 30 minutes or less using unmanned aerial vehicles. Putting Prime Air into commercial use will take some number of years as we advance the technology and wait for the necessary FAA rules and regulations." Nevertheless, since a sizable portion of Amazon’s goods weigh less than 5 pounds, this will make much of a difference. As 70% of Amazon packages weigh less than 5 pounds. And the service will only be viable by 2015. The drones have a technical name: octocoptors.

The rules and regulations for octocoptor will have to be sorted out. Nobody wants five pounds of solid mass to come crashing on their heads after all. Prime Air is a brainchild of the R&D department of Amazon. It had been one of the ideas circulating in the mind of Jeff Bezos since a long time ago. Today he is ready to make it a reality. Of course, it will take some degree of negotiations with the FAA before the octocoptors service is air-worthy

In the capacity of a giant retail center, Amazon caters to 225 million customers. It is a firm that thrives on chaos. The creative vision of its founder permeates the workers and general staff. If anyone wants anything, he or she can obtain it from Amazon. The winning over of clientele, by making the transactional process one of trust and commitment, is something Amazon excels in. With this latest addition to the Amazon repertoire, in the form of delivery drones, the company is all set to expand in an even more fundamental way.
