Uruguay is to be the first country in the world to legalize marijuana production, sale and consumption. In a bid which began with presidential writ and ended with a law being implemented, marijuana legalization was successful in Uruguay.
As a nation, Uruguay was the first one to grant its citizens the freedom to smoke marijuana. This move by the country is being watched very closely by some other governments which alsowant to legalize the soft-core drug. The aim of the drug liberalizationpolicy was to beat the criminal drug lords at their own game.
The decision was voted for in the Senate and the end result was in favor of marijuana usage. Many people who had always been supporting the legalization of the drug came out of their homes and gathered outside the Senate building. They held green balloons and waved flags of Jamaica in support of the singer Bob Marley who also used to smoke the drug.
Also called cannabis, marijuana is a psychoactive drug that though having intoxicant effects is not as hard core as heroin or opium. From now on citizens of Uruguay will be able to purchase 40 grams of the drug from pharmacists on the basis of a license. The age of usage is above 18.
Within the next four months, the law will be fully implemented. After that people will be able to grow as many as six marijuana plants in the confines of their own homes. Marijuana does not only have recreational uses but is a major drug for pain relief. The Netherlands is the only other country on the face of the planet to allow the consumption of the drug.
