The holidays are always a time of year full of merriment that brings families together, often times from far away as people come together to exchange gifts and attend holiday parties. The eggnog will be flowing as people generously give gifts, which are sometimes extravagant. This, in combination with the fact people are making large purchases and filling their homes with expensive gifts, makes many consider the holidays the most dangerous time of year.
The festive nature and increase in travel means that many people will be in unfamiliar places and, potentially, in compromising positions. However, thanks to many entrepreneurs and the exponential growth of technology, many of these problems can be mitigated just by using a smartphone.
bSafe is a personal safety alarm created by Bipper AS that helps ensure that late night and lonely runners, or those just walking home alone, will be able to create a ruckus should they be attacked. This app allows users to set up a safety network that will be alerted to their location (the app is GPS enabled) if they push the SOS button.
Once that button has been pushed, the network will be sent a text message with the users’ whereabouts. The safety network can also track users in livetime, which is great for anyone who loves solo hikes in the wilderness.
Similar to bSafe, but made for the iOS operating system, Guardly allows users to quickly and easily contact a personal safety network, up to 15 people, simply by hitting one button. This app is also able to track users’ locations while they are indoors, which will come in handy for those making large purchases, like Christmas presents, in large shopping centers.
The holidays are a time people like to throw parties – often to excess. This can make driving home home dicey, especially considering it is more likely there are inclement weather conditions. However, Breathometers allows users to turn their smartphones into a breathalyzer, a feature that will hopefully enable people to make good decisions and keep everyone on the road safe.
Available on the iPhone operating system, cab4me allows users to get a cab anywhere and at anytime. Using a map, this app allows users to find a cab anywhere. Once users locate a cab, the app provides them with payment and contact information and, should the app not have information on cabs in that particular location, it will provide a local search for the user.
This makes finding a cab much easier, especially for those who have had a little too much to drink.
This app is a personal emergency alert system that lives in users’ purses and pockets. Similar to bSafe, this app allows users to send a discreet SOS call just by tapping a button. As soon as the alarm is triggered, the phone begins recording and the app will pinpoint the users location. Should the operator determine this is an emergency, they will call 911 and provide local authorities will all necessary information to ensure the user arrives home safe and sound.
This app is extremely useful and has six functions, including calling friends, campus police, and 911. However it is also able to programmed to a “Watch My Back Setting” – a timed alert that must be disabled with a password and an “I’m here” setting that alerts your friends and family when you arrive home safe.
