'Skyrim' Modders Bring 'Morrowind' To Life In Amazing 'Skywind' Mod

The Elder Scrolls modding community never ceases to impress.

Whether they’re beautifying the world of Skyrim—or simply making its characters more visually appealing—there’s always something new going on. One modder even created a full single-player game which he used as a job application.

But there’s little doubt that the Skywind mod is among the most ambitious, impressive mods out there. Skywind is an effort to recreate the world of Morrowind within the Skyrim engine, all from the ground up. And it looks amazing.

Enemies, armor, textures, landscapes—everything is being rebuilt from scratch.

Progress so far has been largely environmental, including the impressive alien terrain of the world and its monstrous inhabitants, but the team plans to bring the quests and NPCs from Morrowind into the picture as well. And, one imagines, there will be plenty of opportunities for entirely new Skywind content as well.

The mod blends elements of both games, leaving in the crafting system from Skyrim, for instance, while using the armor system from Morrowind. “You will be able to place 2 pauldrons, 2 gauntlets, greaves, boots, cuirass, and a helmet on your character all at the same time,” according to the mod’s FAQ, though Morrowind’s system of layered clothing, armor and robes will not make the cut.

Here’s the new “making of” video, showing off just what this labor of love has achieved so far:

The small team of eight people has swelled to around 70 now, and they’re looking to expand. Would-be volunteers should go here to find out more.

To actually play the mod, you’ll need legitimate copies of both Morrowind and Skyrim.

Morrowind remains one of the more beloved entries in the Elder Scrolls franchise, and while we’ve seen overhauls of the game in the past, nothing I’ve seen so far looks this impressive.
