The Independent Games Festival has announced the nominees for its grand prizes, to be awarded at the end of the Independent Games Summit in San Francisco in March. With 650 applicants judged by 375 judges, the IGF awards represent one of the few opportunities indie developers get to a) luxuriate in the approval of their peers and b) dress up nice (optional).

Each of the categories being contested has a prize of $3,000, with the exception of $5,000 for the Nuovo award for innovation, and $30,000 for the Seumas McNally Grand Prize.

The nominees for the categories are:

And the winner is…

In a very real sense, of course, everyone’s a winner. That said, it would be a surprise to see Don’t Starve, Papers, Please or The Stanley Parable walk away without recognition. Simogo’s sinuously textual Device 6 is accomplished and intriguing, and the invention of Dominique Pamplemousse… is winning, whether or not it is winning.

Also, I am not sure why I am writing any of this when I could be playing 868-HACK.

Generally, although there is maybe a little too much concurrence in the runners and riders, this listing helps to confirm what we already knew: 2013 was a very strong year indeed for independent games, and 2014 has some very promising possibilities.

Meanwhile, I would suggest everyone download and play Save the Date as an amuse-bouche. It’s free, and it’s really rather wonderful, even if not a hot favorite for the Nuovo award.
