There is plenty of posh to go around in wine country. It seems that every month someone opens a new, even more fabulously luxurious place to stay. Despite all of the well-appointed competition, Kenwood Inn and Spa retains a unique status as an old guard destination; it’s a classic that needs no reinventing.
This isn’t to say that the property is dated, in fact it has a special timelessness to it. Situated in Sonoma’s Valley of the Moon, the Inn is surrounded by vineyards, oak groves, walnut orchards and fruit trees. The Mediterranean architecture resembles a hybrid of Tuscan villa and Spanish Misson. A “no children under 18″ policy has helped the Inn polish its reputation as an intimate hideaway for adults; you won’t find any televisions here either. You will find 25 guestrooms and four suites, all appointed with fireplaces, featherbeds and Italian linens. Located just off the main drag in Sonoma, the Inn doesn’t suffer from traffic-related noise at all. The traffic is minimal and the rooms are set back deep on the property so the only sounds that compete for your attention are the property’s various fountains. In fact, I counted three water sources, including the old mill wheel. At night, open your window to a full moon hanging low over the vineyards and enjoy the liquid serenade…you’ll never sleep better.
The restaurant and wine bar are exclusively for guests—which translates into personal, one-on-one experience throughout your stay. Indeed, what defines Kenwood above all else is the service. Service is a big deal these days, it matters in the luxury market as much as 400 thread count sheets, rainfall showers and Jacuzzi tubs. I would define Kenwood’s service as natural and easy, a blend of warmth and professionalism.
Morning brings a full breakfast, and I do mean full. Continental offerings are provided in addition to a full breakfast menu that changes daily. We took full advantage, (it’s included in the room price), and ordered pancakes and eggs in addition to our buffet selections of smoothie, croissant and granola. One must fill the tank before a hearty day of wine tasting. Dinner offers much of the same welcoming warmth from the chef and servers. Plan to sit outside in front of the fireplace and indulge in Italian-inspired dishes and local wines.
The award-winning spa sits adjacent to the pool and specializes in wine-related (grape) rejuvenating therapies. If you are considering a treatment, opt for a facial; I found my therapeutic massage to be rather basic. Guests are also entitled to day passes to the nearby Parkpoint Health Club which has full workout facilities and fitness classes.
