Fashionable Smart Watch Debuts at Mobile World Congress

Last year at Mobile World Congress 2013, we saw the first dual-sided smart phone with YotaPhon e by the Russian user experience company, Yota Devices. This year, it’s a smart watch by the Finnish company, Creoir.

The Ibis Smart Watch is what the industry is now calling, smart wearable jewellery. The Ibis is made of crystal and stainless steel. The rolling curves and swirls of the band were inspired by a flying bird whose wing tips touch together while carrying a young bird on its back. A far cry from the customizable, geometric Pebble Smart Watch .

The difference is the design-led approach of the Ibis which is, considering the lack of a better word, smart — considering the rapidly emerging smart watch industry. According to a report from Markets and Markets , the global wearable electronics market was $2.5 billion in 2012 and is expected to pass $8 billion by 2018. Wearables is a market that has come out of no where fast.

The company is betting fashion and style will be the key driver for global consumer smart watch sales. Much like Google Glass’s hope their partnership with Warby Parker, an on-line eCommerce company that sells trendy glasses will make Glass less geeky and more rapidly embraced by consumers, Ibis emphasizes the design side of the smart watch.

Watches, and their wearability, have always been tied to style. Wearable smart watches have not. They’ve resembled a bleak, shapeless band void of any fashion or style except that a 1970s episode of Star Trek. The tech and functionality of the smart watch never intersected with fashion. Ibis wants to change that.

According to Gartner Inc., most smart watches have not achieved mass-market appeal due to the lack of innovative design.

Creoir’s CEO, Pekka  Väyrynen believes the demand for smart watches will be driven by fashion and sport brands, and the Ibis Smart Watch exemplifies the type of product that we create for fashion brands.

“Every brand has its own design language, so with each client we start from scratch to develop a product that specifically matches the brand and their audience. With our expertise, we can provide consumer brand owners with everything they need to have a real advantage when entering the smart device space,” adds Väyrynen.

Timeless beauty and functionality punctuated by current and the latest technology which includes a low power optimised Android platform, iOS and Android interfaces, an OLED display with integrated touch,Wifi, Bluetooth 4.0 and USB connectivity topped off with an e-compass and ambient light sensor.

If that wasn’t enough, they also packed in remote control and notifications directly via your smart phone. Now, you can truly be a stylish nerd.
