A brief insight into what will happen if the Corephotonics concept is put to use
The HTC M8 certainly has been the most anticipated phones of all times and since we had HTC taking away the best smartphone award for one of its flagships, we are expecting a lot from this one. A number of leaked images have given some insight into the camera of the upcoming HTC M8 and what we can deduce from the pictures if one camera but two separate lenses.

The images have furthered confirmed that the phone will bring along certain imaging features which will transcend the boundaries of the ordinary 3D. With this we instantly turned to the Corephotonics which is the latest dual sense concept being put forward for the smartphone makers but representatives from HTC have confirmed that this is certainly not what’s behind the M8 but they can show what this particular module could do a fitting inside a smartphone or compact camera.
The true catch here is the Corephotonics' use of two lenses with two different focal lengths with one of them being wide-angle and the other being 3x zoom. This enables magnification of distant things which can be facilitated through the adjustment in these lenses with no need for zooming.
A video shows a test setup which shows a comparison between a dual-lens system and a traditional smartphone camera. The result was a clear 13-megapixel image regardless of whether it was at 1x or 3x zoom for the Corephotonics' startup.
If we consider Nokia’s camera here, they are relying merely on the digital zoom to such an extent that they are outputting a 3x magnified image entails a drop in resolution down to five megapixels. The dual lens on the other hand provide a stable image even under the digital zoom and the use of parallel lenses also enables the low-light performance.
Working in real time, the Corephotonics software will match each pixel from one lens with the corresponding pixel from the other lens and as a result this reduces the noise and the overall result is a cleaner picture.
