Whisper is a very famous anonymous sharing application and the future lies wide open before it. And venture capitalism is to thank for the dollars and cents literally falling into its coffers.
While $30 million got collected this time around, it places the net total value of the enterprise at $200 million which in itself says a lot. Shasta Ventures, Thrive Capital and Tencent partook in the fundraising efforts.
In fact, Tencent may make a further contribution of $15 million. Among the list of investors may be included Sequoia Capital and LightSpeed Venture Partners. As the saying goes, many hands make light work. All these firms got together as a group and made the job a piece of cake.
Whisper encourages individuals to display their rugged individuality by speaking what is on their minds out loud. And this is a good thing. It is the “in” thing with youth and has become quite a presence on campuses around the nation. And although it has been overtaken by its rival app Secret, it is still big enough to bite back.
Secret is more of a streamlined affair than Whisper. Whisper is a sober startup that has a long way to go. But it will be plodding along incessantly on the road to progress. Silicon Valley has rarely seen animosity of the level that is visible between Whisper and Secret.
They are the Mike Tyson and Evander Holyfield of the application world. Whisper meanwhile has not ceased to experiment and it will not cease to experiment. And the result of all its exploration and experimentation will be to achieve its original objectives.
Every app (and there are hundreds of thousands of them in the world) has a story to tell. And it wants to dominate the environment. Let’s see which one of the two (Secret or Whisper) comes out on top in the end.
