Abigail Breslin is not a baby anymore. She has grown up rather fast in the past couple of months. Among the rites of passage she has engaged in to prove her womanhood is a hot photo shoot. And in her latest movie she plays one of two sisters who are on a murderous rampage.
How dark can the role get? She has truly left her goody-two shoe days way behind in the past. The trailer shows this in a clear cut manner. She and her sister on screen face the full onslaught of a drunkard mother and abusive stepfather.
Her sister is played by Georgie Henley. And the dipsomaniac mum of the two is depicted by Mira Sorvino. The sisters after one too many episodes with their addict mother’s crazy behavior decide to kill her. They want to make it all look it was a random event though.
The fact that the movie is based on a real life event makes for even greater audience interest in the plot. The Bathtub Girls of Toronto are the negative source of inspiration behind the film.
The two girls in the movie stage a drowning of sorts. In real life (as opposed to reel life) the girls told so many other friends and acquaintances about their crime that it becomes common knowledge.
Ultimately the misdeeds end up entering the know how of the Toronto police. The movie shows that unspoken guilt can make an unstable personality utter the truth in an act of confession.
While Abigail’s original persona of a cute little girl has still not evaporated, it is a different and darker self she portrays on screen this time.
The fans will just have to get used to her novel identity. She is like the caterpillar that has literally emerged from the chrysalis as a butterfly.
