"I started thinking, 'Why do I feel so much shame? Because the cameras are on me? Because the paparazzi can't wait to get a picture of me looking like I've gained a few pounds?'" she said during an appearance on CBS' The Talk this week. "We have to take the shame out of it! It's not fair."
According to Valerie, the paparazzi were totally focused on the weight she had gained and it felt so odd to be above her usual poundage. Valerie had tried the Jenny Craig weight loss program and lost 40 pounds.
"I broke my foot three months ago and I've not been able to work out," Bertinelli told the Talk hosts. But now that she was unable to exercise as per doctor’s orders, she had gained back some of those pounds.
Valerie said that it was sad how women were blamed the minute they put on some weight. This was not the way it was supposed to be. Valerie furthermore spoke of how we ought to give each other a break. "I think we all need to give each other a break. Especially women -- let's leave each other alone!" added Valerie.
Valerie is 53 years old and is not what you would call fat. She is just curvy and voluptuous. Yet she feels that all eyes are on her since women are judged by harsher standards than men when it comes to weight.
When she was in recovery mode due to her broken foot, she almost went into a tailspin thinking that she wouldn’t be able to exercise. However, now she has been given the go-ahead by her physician to start exercising once again and she is thankful for that.
"I have gained a few pounds since I broke my foot, and it started to panic me at a certain point, and I thought, 'No, wait a minute. This is my body. I'm almost 54, I broke my foot, I haven't been able to move,'" she explained. "My doctor even said, 'Do not get your heart rate up.' So I couldn't do anything. But now I'm back in the gym and I'm ready to go."
Bertinelli spoke of how she had almost had panic attacks once she began thinking of how she would gain back all that weight. But then she thought to herself, why create so much fuss over nothing. She loved to eat and she was not about to change that. The only solution was a sensible exercise program. And she is on it and losing those pesky pounds once again!
