Lydia Ko Beats Stacy Lewis to Win LPGA

The South Korean-born New Zealander, Lydia Ko is merely 17 years old. Yet at this tender age she went ahead and won the LPGA title. She gave Stacey Lewis the curve by a single point at the Swinging Skirts Classic Tournament.

And all this occurred merely a few days after her 17th birthday. One asks oneself, how could someone so young accomplish so much? Ko took home $270,000 in the form of prize money. She further got her name mentioned among Time magazine’s 100 most influential people’s list.

In fact, Ko is the sole golfer to have made it to the roster. She is all set to move up the ranks from fourth to second. Her style of playing the game and performance on the links is simply impeccable.

"It was just intense the whole way," Ko said. "At one point I had a two-shot lead, but then Stacy made a birdie and Jenny made a birdie. At the 18th hole I knew how loud the claps were, so I knew I needed to hit it close and give myself a birdie opportunity."

The girl’s got talent alright. Stacey Lewis did put up quite a show yet she had to settle down with playing second fiddle in the end.

"I knew it was going to be tough. I knew she wasn't going to go away. Lydia played great," Lewis said. "She answered every time I hit a shot in there. More credit to her. I did all I could. I made three birdies coming in and made her work for it at least."

With every move Stacey made, Ko came back one better. And so it was a foregone conclusion that Ko beat Stacey hands down. Yet Ko still acknowledges that Stacey was the source of her inspiration. She had always wanted to be a star player like her.

"When I see her play, it just makes me feel like I need to play good to kind of keep up with her," Ko said. "She's such a great player and I admire her all the way. Someday I want to become a great player like her."

Meanwhile, after being included in the Time 100 list, Lydia Ko spoke of how she was humbled by the honor of being a part of the one hundred. It was quite a pleasant surprise for her.

The Time 100 list recognizes the efforts of the world’s most active and energetic people who have made a difference in everyday affairs. Their dedication to whatever it is they do, makes a dent in the daily rigmarole of an otherwise bureaucratic world.

Whether they are artists, scientists or philosophers or sportsmen, they have created a sea change in the atmosphere via their radical behavior. Ko is way beyond her age group in this regard and she has oodles of talent.

“Lydia Ko is exceptionally talented, mature beyond her years and well liked by golf fans and competitors alike,” IMG client Annika Sorenstam wrote about Ko in this year's issue. “She is responsible for sparking increased interest in our sport not just in her native South Korea and adopted homeland of New Zealand but also among juniors across the globe.”
