Redskins in the name Washington Redskins was racist to the core according to Senator Reid. Despite the Senator’s promptings and considerable uproar from Native Americans, Snyder refuses to change his team’s name.
Senator Reid delivered a vituperative speech recently urging Snyder to change his team Washington Redskin’s outdated title. The NFL is a place of cultural diversity and has no room for such insulting labels as the word “Redskins”.

"I... applaud the NBA's work to swiftly move to stamp out bigotry in its ranks," Reid said. "The National Football League should take an assist from the NBA and pick up the slack," Reid said as he urged the NFL to stop "sitting on its hands doing nothing while an entire population of Americans has been denigrated."
But Snyder who is the owner of the team is too bigheaded to listen to the voice of reason. He has gone on record to say that he will not change his team’s name from Redskins to something else even if he were to lose a case in court to Senator Reid.
This of course is the height of conceit and stubbornness. Snyder’s alibi is that he will stick to tradition. Another team owner was recently fined millions for his racist comments.
This occurred in the NBA. The Los Angeles Clippers owner was the guilty party and he had to pay a high price for his bigoted response. Senator Reid spoke of how the NFL ought to pick up some hints from the NBA.
The name Redskins refers to Native Americans, but the terminology belongs in the past when the White Man and Indians were often in conflict with one another. Nowadays there is greater racial equality and tolerance for various ethnic minorities.
But Snyder’s rigid stance is an irrational fact that resists any change for the better. Reid has urged the NFL commissioner to act tough on Snyder and get the vulgar name Redskins disposed off in the trash bin of history.
"What tradition?" Reid posed. "A tradition of racism is all that name leaves in its wake. I urge Daniel Snyder to do what is morally right."
"The NBA has shown leagues like the NFL that they have a moral responsibility to take disciplinary action against people like Dan Snyder, who also continues to proudly promote bigotry with the use of a dictionary-defined racial slur as his team's name," Oneida representative Ray Halbritter said.
Senator Reid was a boxer in his erstwhile days. He has fighting spirit and will not be giving up so soon as far as the battle to eradicate the Redskins epithet is concerned. The morality of the times demands that this vital transformation take place. And the responsibility rests squarely on Snyder’s shoulders. How far he will test the patience of Americans is yet to be seen.
