Tokyo Earthquake Injures Several People

An earthquake in Tokyo resulted in several people getting injured. Japan lies above certain tectonic fault lines due to which it is often subject to seismic activity.

An earthquake with a magnitude of 6 on the Richter scale struck Japan on Monday. And although 17 people were injured as a result of the catastrophe, there were no casualties. Also no tsunami was formed.

The denizens of Tokyo who were ready to leisurely luxuriate in the holiday, found themselves in a fix when the earthquake struck. The buildings and bricks that they were composed of got shook to the core.

It was a very frightening scenario indeed. Among the injured were at least 17 people who rushed in a hurry to find a safe haven. One of these was a lady who faced a dislocation of her shoulder bone.

Merchandise in superstores fell from shelves and furniture in homes started to go topsy-turvy. The earthquake struck near Izu Oshima Island which is close to Tokyo.

This has been the biggest quake to hit Japan since the one in 2011 that unleashed a tsunami. That occurred in conjunction with the nuclear reactor disaster at Fukushima.

The meteorological department has warned the public to be careful since there may be aftershocks for many days after the earthquake. The subway system in Japan was temporarily shut down but later on it was restarted on a regular basis.

As for the nuclear plants, they are intact and that includes the by-now defunct Fukushima facility. Way back in 2011, over 18,000 people died as a result of a tsunami that got generated by the huge earthquake.

It was a blessing that the current earthquake was nowhere near that horrible one that took place three years ago. The problem is that Japan happens to be situated on top of a series of tectonic plates that meet at angles.

Thus whenever there is a shift in the geological forces, an earthquake occurs on a massive scale. But the Japanese have got reinforced buildings which can withstand some mighty shocks without budging an inch.
