The US appears to be the largest market with more downloads coming from Windows 8

Microsoft’s Windows and Windows Phone Store statistics have been revealed for the month of April 2014 and the statistics show the Most downloaded apps by category, country and markets. The reason for publishing these statistics was to help the developers gain better idea about what the “app ecosystem” needs developed and what exactly is it that consumers are looking for.

The US appears to be the largest market of Windows 8 and Windows Phone apps and the most downloads have been attributed to Windows 8. US accounts for 31% of the Windows Store downloads. The Windows Phone Store downloads are spread over with 12% from the US, 10% from China, 9% from India and, lastly 8% from Vietnam.

Games are the most popular category and also the most downloaded and this doesn’t come as a surprise. However, this does appear to be surprising that this category doesn’t boast the highest downloads per app ratio. The highest downloads per app ratio was seen by the Social app category and the next in line was Photos.
