The two join a cast that already includes Adam Driver, Oscar Isaac, Andy Serkis, Domhnall Gleeson, Max von Sydow, John Boyega and Daisy Ridley as well as returning stars Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher, Mark Hamill, Anthony Daniels, Peter Mayhew and Kenny Baker.
“I could not be more excited about Lupita and Gwendoline joining the cast of Episode VII," Lucasfilm president and Episode VII producer Kathleen Kennedy said in a statement. “It’s thrilling to see this extraordinarily talented ensemble taking shape.”
While most movie maniacs are already familiar with the Oscar-winning actress of 12 Years a Slave, many may not be as acquainted with Christie -- yet. While no one knows her exact age -- not even her! -- The Hollywood Reporter offers a rundown of the actress, including her background and what's to come for the new recruit of the J.J. Abrams-helmed installment.
Christie, who is a star on the popular hit TV series Game of Thrones has been in other Sci-Fi and Fantasy roles previously.
Christie lived in the science-fastasy scene of Wizards vs. Aliens, the BBC series (which aired on the Hub Network in the U.S.) featuring Scott Haran and Percelle Ascott as an alien-fighting duo. She played Lexi, a smart princess who gets involved with Haran's Tom Clarke. The teen series -- written by Russell T. Davies and Phil Ford, who is credited with re-invigorating Doctor Who for a new generation -- has been renewed for a third season, it was announced in March.
Nyong’o won a Best Supporting Actress last year for her feature film debut in the 2013 film “12 Years a Slave,” in which she played the abused slave Patsy alongside actors Chiwetel Ejiofor and Michael Fassbender. Meanwhile, Christie is starring as the warrior Brienne of Tarth on the wildly successful HBO fantasy drama “Game of Thrones” and is set to appear in another lucrative franchise – she’ll reportedly appear as Commander Lyme in the film “The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 2.” Lyme heads up District 13 in the book and, like protagonist Katniss Everdeen, is a former champion of the government’s Hunger Games.
