E3 2014: Skylanders Trap Masters Revealed Ahead Of E3

Skylander Trap Masters Gearshift and Krypt King announced ahead of doors opening at this year’s E3. Disney Infinity also expected to add Venom to their Marvel line-up at the show.

As journalists get ready for hands-on with Skylanders Trap Team at E3 the internet rumor – mill has been hard at work trying to second guess what we will see. In amongst all this hides some official announcements about new characters for Skylanders Trap Team.

Earlier in the week Activision tweeted both teaser and final art work for two new Trap Master characters. Although less of a novelty (at least from what we’ve seen so far) these Trap Masters are the main characters this year. Their “traptanium” weapons are honed to catch villain characters in the new Trap toys — players can then take control of the enemy characters and even upgrade their abilities.

The first of these, Gearshift, is particularly interesting because this is the first female Trap Master (or should that be Trap Mistress?) we have seen. In Skylanders Swap Force all the main characters were female so it’s nice to see a wider gender mix in Trap Team already. The character looks robotic in nature and is in the Tech element of the game. She wields a large gear weapon that can separate to offer double handed attacks.

She is another example of a strong female character in Skylanders, a series that has offered a wide range of well realized female figurines that have been popular with both boys and girls — although so far the total number of male Skylanders still outweighs the females.

The second Trap Master revealed before E3 is Krypt King. This figure was spotted in the trailer previously and appeared to be a re-modeled (unreleased) Giant Skylander from a previous game. This male Trap Master is in the Undead element and can be expected to have a range of mummification attacks.

It is likely that both Gear Shift and Krypt King will be part of what we get hands-on with at E3, along side other new Skylander core and Trap Master characters.

Other news, although coming from retail packaging rather than an official announcement is the inclusion of Venom in Disney Infinity . This seems to suggest a Spider-Man play set for the game when it launches along with a late September release date which would be ahead of Skylanders Trap Team .
