It is indeed a great loss and we are sad to announce that Casey Kasam passed away today on Sunday 15th June at the age of 82. The renowned radio legend and host of American Top 40 took his last breath after being hospitalized for an infected bedsore. His daughter Kerri Kasem broke the news on her Facebook page as she wrote;
"Early this Father’s Day morning, our dad Casey Kasem passed away surrounded by family and friends. Even though we know he is in a better place and no longer suffering, we are heartbroken. Thank you for all your love, support and prayers. The world will miss Casey Kasem, an incredible talent and humanitarian; we will miss our Dad. With love, Kerri, Mike and Julie.”
Over two weeks back, on Sunday 1st June, Casey Kasem was brought to the St. Anthony Hospital in western Washington state in a critical condition. He had been suffering from Lewy body dementia since quite some time and had remained bedridden up till the time he was hospitalized. After hearing the traguc news, some of us might reflect back on his past life when he began his long radio career in the mid-'50s after being drafted into the army and serving his time in Korea. During his service abroad, he became a DJ for the Armed Forces Radio Korea Network.
Surely we all remember the American Top 40 which was founded by the legendary Kasem himself back in 1970 and till 1988 he served as the host of the show. After departing from this show, he was hosting the Casey's Top 40 after which he returned back to the American Top 40 in 1998 and hosted the program through 2004. We saw Ryan Seacrest taking his position after he left. Some of us may only known him as the radio person or the famous host but there was an interesting side to him which many of us didn’t know; he provided vocals as Shaggy in the Scooby-Doo franchise and starred in many low budget films.
Casey has left behind a heartbroken family which is going to need some time to recover from the loss. The divided family had been fighting over the issue of taking his care and it had been years and the issue still remained till his last days. Last year his three grown up children from his first wife made a claim stating that their father’s second wife was not letting them see him. Apparently the issue had been resolved but last month it erupted again after Kasem went missing.
One of the daughters, Kerry, was given control over his sick father for his treatment on June 6th Friday. Doctors had ruled that feeding him and keeping him hydrated would cause him more pain and hence she decided not to give him food and water – only to make sure that he wouldn’t suffer further. However on Monday a judge said that Kasem should be fed and kept hydrated after a court-appointed legal team reviewed his medical condition.
