Momoa’s long been the rumored front-runner for Aquaman. The actor has long denied the possibility, but Variety’s Dave McNary confirms the role in “Jason Momoa to Play Aquaman in ‘Batman V. Superman’.”
Momoa’s found moderate fame in Hollywood by headlining the Conan the Barbarbian reboot in 2011, but he hasn’t really grabbed the audience.
It’s a risky choice in audience bait, but the buff Game of Thrones actor can definitely fit into the scaled tights the character is known for.
Additionally, Jesse Eisenberg will play Lex Luthor and Jeremy Irons will take over the role of Alfred for the newest Bats. Amy Adams, Laurence Fishburne, and Diane Lane will all reprise their roles from Man of Steel.
While the Nolan Batman trilogy found success on the big screen, critics of the film studio have found the lack of introduction of the Justice League to be really odd. The Justice League, like the Avengers, help to maintain order by pooling resources and creating bonds.
Superheroes are big money makers right now.
Captain America: The Winter Soldier has grossed over $256 million domestically with a filming budget of $170 million. With $454 million in foreign sales, the movie led by Chris Evan has earned $710 million in just over 10 weeks.
Warner Brothers is looking to cash in on the superhero gravy train and adding Momoa will help since comic fans have requested more characters that aren’t quite-so-Nolan-esque for quite some time.
According to Hitfix’s Drew McWeeny, Aquaman will not have a major role in Dawn of Justice, but the repercussions from the end of Man of Steel will force the Kryptonian to face the environmental outcome to the Indian Ocean.
McWeeny’s “Jason Momoa will play Aquaman in 'Dawn Of Justice,' and we know how it will happen” mentions Momoa’s annoyance at constantly being asked, but points out that now it’s confirmed. So questions will be coming in full force, especially at conventions and movie premiers where sound bytes are everything. Being in a large studio, expected megahit budget film will certainly keep the questions coming—even with the Superman curse.
Man of Steel made a decent domestic gross of $291 million and $377 million internationally. At $668 million, the move made almost three times what it cost to produce (a whopping $225 million).
Superman has been hard jump-start with several reboots but the latest connection piece should help.
As more and characters are added to Dawn of Justice, the Justice League set up seems to be falling into place.
