North Korea is known for its belligerent stance in the region. And its leader and dictator Kim Jong Un is just as mercurial if not more so. One moment he is smiling and the other he is all blazing and full of fury.
In a gesture of good will, Kim recently announced that his nation would be sending cheerleaders along with its athletes to the Asian Games which are to take place soon in South Korea.
"It is necessary to put an end to all kinds of calumnies and vituperation that foster misunderstanding and distrust among the fellow countrymen," the North said in a statement carried by the official KCNA news agency.
"We have decided to dispatch a cheerleading squad along with the athletes to the 17th Asian Games in order to improve relationships between the North and the South and to create an atmosphere of national reconciliation."
This comes just some time after a series of rocketry and missile firing that almost shook the region. North Korea regularly makes threats against its more democratic southern half.
"Participating in the drill were combatants, artillery pieces of various calibres, combat ships including submarines, and formations of pursuit fighters, bombers and transport planes of units," the North's Korean Central News Agency said.
The Asian Games are to take place in South Korea. Among the few things of the North that are quite liked by the South are its fit and fabulous cheerleaders who have the ability to lighten the atmosphere by their playful routines.
In an about-face, the North has said that it wants to put an end to years of tension and clashes between the two nations.
The sending of a cheerleading group to the 17th Asian Games comes at a time when the two countries couldn’t be worse off as far as national relations are concerned.
Kim has warned the South that any in-routes it makes into the controversial sea border will be dealt with in a severe manner on the spot.
He also began a drill in which a fake assault on one of the islands was carried out. The army, navy and air force joined hands to carry out the assault. It was a clear signal to South Korea to back off. It is said that the mock belligerence was due to the Chinese President’s recent visit to South Korea.
It had inflamed all of North Korea and made Kim’s blood boil. And to top it all, the islands, that North Korea is currently attacking in its military drill manner, are precisely the ones which are the most vulnerable in case of an all out war between the two states.
