Broadchurch premiered in March and April of 2013, running for 8 episodes. The plot centered on finding who murdered an 11-year-old boy in Dorset, England.
"ITV set to broadcast US remake of 'Broadchurch'" by NME reports 10 million viewers watched the finale as DI Alec Hardy (David Tennant) and DS Ellie Miller (Olivia Colman) put the murder to rest. BBC America ran the U.S. broadcasting in August of the same year.
Gracepoint will star Tennant while Breaking Bad's Anna Gunn will replace Colman. And Huffington Post UK's "David Tennant's UK Fans Will See Him In US Broadchurch Remake - 'Gracepoint' Is Coming Here" notes Tennant explained the ending will be different from the UK, offering a bit more Americanization and changing the expected ending.
The U.S. version will be an 'event' drama and run for 10 episodes. The Doctor Who actor will play Emmett Carver, the lead detective on an investigation that will introduce "new characters" while "identifying new suspects and threading new storylines through the gripping narrative."
When Carver gets the job promised to Ellie Miller, she must pack away all the resentment and anger to inform her young son Tom (Jack Irvine) about the murder of Danny Solano (Nikolas Filipovic), his best friend.
The entire town of Gracepoint will pulled into the story, including kayak rental business owner Jack Reinhold (Golden Globe winner Nick Nolte) and mysterious RV park resident Susan Wright (Academy Award nominee Jacki Weaver).
Like the original series, the town's local, ambitious news reporter will dog the investigators footsteps since he's the nephew of Detective Miller. Owen Burke (Kevin Zegers) isn't the reporter in town, since Renee Clemons (Jessica Lucas) will use her connection to Carver to cover the story for the San Francisco Globe.
And Broadchurch will be returning to the UK for a second season.
Both Tennant and Colman will be reprising their roles, along with writer Chris Chibnell swearing everyone to secrecy. And the media has so far followed the request of no filming footage or pictures in order to surprise the audience with a well-written and produced second season.
Luckily, both Broadchurch and Gracepoint have strong, critically acclaimed actresses leading the way.
Detective Sergeant Ellie Miller has earned Colman multiple acting awards, including a recent BAFTA for Best Leading Actress in a television drama.
And Gunn isn't without credentials since she won a 2013 Emmy for her role in Breaking Bad. Up against the likes of Maggie Smith as the Dowager Countess of Grantham, the 45-year-old blonde actress won Best Supporting Actress in a television drama for Breaking Bad's Skyler White.
Gracepoint will premiere Oct 2, 2014 on Fox.
ITV will broadcast the episodes later in the UK.
