The press service of the Russian Tennis Federation announced Sunday that Capitals star Alex Ovechkin and Russian tennis pro Maria Kirilenko have broken off their engagement.

In what appears to be a truly disappointing news, we have to announce that one of the most influential couples of D.C have split up as we get a report from the press service of the Russian Tennis Federation that made an announcement on Sunday that Capitals star Alex Ovechkin and Russian tennis pro Maria Kirilenko were no longer together and broke off their two year long engagement. The news report came in R-Sport which a few lines from Kirilenko;

“I have decided to terminate the engagement,” she said. ” There are many reasons, but I do not want to go into details. I’ll say one thing: our relationship completed, but I respect Sasha as a person and athlete and I sincerely wish him continued athletic success. … At this moment, I’m concentrating on getting prepared for the nearest tournament. And I’m hoping that soon I’ll make my fans happy with news not only about my personal life, but also about my sports achievement.”

The couple first met back in 2011 at the U.S Open for that year and they announced their engagement in December of 2012. We can well imagine how popular their affair had been as the 2013 Sports Illustrated feature on Ovechkin opened with their relationship. Ovechkin, who is surrently hanging out with former KHL player Ruben Begunts and Brooklyn Nets forward Andrei Kirilenko in Saint-Tropez, so far has remained quiet on this matter and we have received no comments.
