Melanie Griffith recently sat down to explain why she won’t be seeing her daughter, Dakota Johnson, on 50 Shades of Grey. And she spoke about how she bade adieu to Antonio Banderas.
The mature and matronly, Melanie Griffith is not averse to some on screen action as was proved by her role as an alcoholic in Thirst. The movie is about half an hour long and was directed by Rachel McDonald.
Griffith plays a seriously dipsomaniac sex worker named Sue in the film. She hooks up with wandering dude Billy played by Josh Pence in the dirt-addled bar where she generally panders to the customers.
Their existential adventure together as Sue gets to ease Billy’s depressive illness is shown in starkly realistic form. Melanie has dredged up painful material from her past in order to play the role of Sue.
“I don't drink anymore, but I did. So that really attracted me to it because I wanted to play that kind of part. But that's a smaller part of it.”
“I have not seen "50 Shades of Grey." I don't think I'm going to see it…[Dakota] was like, "You guys cannot come. There's no way." So we're not going. I did go visit for a couple of days when they were shooting just normal stuff. I did see the Room of Pain — I did go in there and check it out,” Griffith said.
“On the eighth, I'm going to see my daughter filming another movie on Pantelleria [in Sicily]. She just did a movie with Johnny Depp ["Black Mass"].”
Melanie Griffith also admired her daughter. The proud mother said, “She's amazing — so good. It's just so beautiful to see her doing this. She had her mom and her dad and her grandmother and she's just taken us all and thrown us away. She's like, "Here I am."”
Melanie expatiated on how she was always viewed as a pickled soul and she was on drugs for awhile too. So she took the experiences while she was inebriated and intoxicated and acted them out in front of the camera.
Melanie contends that she had panic attacks while shooting the scenes for the film. She applauds the director who is a female. Griffith said that there should be more female directors since they brought feelings and emotions to the script.
On the other hand, she just went through the harrowing experience of a divorce with Antonio Banderas recently. Griffith is happy though since all of her three kids are grownups by now. And as for herself, she is not concentrating on Hollywood alone.
“I'm going to do a lot of things. I'm going to do "Pippin" on Broadway in January. It's not about my career now. It's just about finding great work and having a good time. My kids are almost grown. I'm getting divorced [from Antonio Banderas],” said Melanie.
“I'm just happy. I'm really joyful. Life is good.”
She has other things on her mind. Her daughter Dakota Johnson has forbidden both her and Dakota’s dad, Don Johnson, from seeing the racy thriller in which she is to appear titled 50 Shades of Grey.
Some of the scenes are too explicit even by Hollywood standards, and having her parents seeing the sex scenes would probably lead to a whole lot of embarrassment.
