Buffalo Bills wide receiver Sammy Watkins practiced for the first time on Monday since his rib injury.
ESPN's Mike Rodak interviewed Bills head coach Doug Marrone on Aug. 25. Marrone told Rodak there are "no limits" in terms of Watkins' abilities in practice:
"Buffalo Bills wide receiver Sammy Watkins practiced full Monday for the first time since injuring his ribs in a preseason loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers.
"'No limits,' coach Doug Marrone said of Watkins' participation in practice.
"Watkins sat out Saturday's preseason loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and was limited in practice last week, so his increased participation Monday is a positive sign in his recovery from bruised abs.
"The Bills plan on playing playing some offensive starters, including quarterback EJ Manuel, in Thursday's preseason finale against the Detroit Lions, but Watkins deferred on Monday his status to Marrone.
"That wasn't a surprise, given Marrone wasn't happy with Watkins talking about his injury last week."
Watkins said he could have suited up for the preseason game against the Buccaneers. However, him sitting that game out was a matter of "being safe," per Rodak in a separate ESPN update:
"Buffalo Bills wide receiver Sammy Watkins (ribs) did not play in Saturday's 27-14 preseason loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
"Watkins, the fourth overall pick in May's draft, bruised his ribs in last Saturday's preseason loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers. He was limited in four practices this week, although the rookie downplayed his injury and said he felt ready to play in a game.
"'I'm fine, I could go out there and practice if I need to,' Watkins said after Tuesday's practice. 'But the thing is doing it without pain, but I could play a full game right now. It's just being safe.'
"But after Saturday's game, Bills coach Doug Marrone had a message for the rookie: 'I told Sammy that you can't talk about injuries,' Marrone said. 'That's what gets you in a bind and it doesn't make us look good when you start saying those things. The doctor, at the end of the day, said he couldn't play.'
"Without Watkins, the Bills used Mike Williams, Robert Woods and Chris Hogan as their first-team receivers with quarterback EJ Manuel. Watkins may also sit out Thursday's preseason finale against the Lions.
"Williams accounted for the team's only receiving touchdown in the loss.
"The Bills were also without starting defensive tackle Kyle Williams (leg) and starting left guard Chris Williams )(lower back) for Saturday's game."
