Black Friday 2014 to Start Even Earlier

A new Wall Street Journal report states the obvious: Black Friday 2014 will start even earlier this Thanksgiving.

The Black Friday creep has been going on since years. In 2013, the climax of the Black Friday sales took place on Thanksgiving Day and not on Black Friday. The online Black Friday sales have already started before the actual Black Friday the last couple of years. The in-store Black Friday sales opening hours have moved into Thanksgiving Day more and more. Last year retailers like Walmart opened stores for the Black Friday sale already at 6pm on Thanksgiving Day.

The Wall Street Journal expects, and I agree, that in-store Black Friday sales start already Thanksgiving Day morning. "It’s inevitable to see them open all day or even earlier than last year,” Joel Bines, managing director and co-leader of consulting firm AlixPartners’ retail practice, said to the WSJ.

We expect the first retailers to announce their Black Friday sales schedules and Thanksgiving opening hours early November. I would not be surprised if Walmart says that the Walmart Black Friday 2014 sale starts at 8am Thanksgiving Day morning. They could try to keep you in their store with multiple Black Friday doorbuster events all the way through Saturday.

My general recommendation is though to shop Black Friday online to avoid the in-store Black Friday deal hunting hassles. I expect the first online Black Friday 2014 deals to be offered on Friday, October 31. Yes. on Halloween!
