Vikings Should Not Have Bought Herschel Walker

Herschel Walker has just celebrated his 25th anniversary after retiring from NFL. On a similar day 25 years ago, Walker was playing for Dallas Cowboys. The team's executives then decided to sell him to Minnesota Vikings in what seemed to be a lucrative deal.

According to Vikingage, the deal stated that Vikings were to give away five of their best players and 8 draft selections in exchange for Herschel. Unknown to the Vikings, they were giving out their best players in exchange for a player who was not going to add much value to their performance.

It later turned out that the deal was in favor of Cowboys because they used the five players and the drafts to improve their performance while Vikings performance continued to dwindle. Back then, Vikings was under the chairmanship of Mike Lynn.

Mike thought he could solve his team's problems by bringing in Herschel as their running back. Though Walker could not be compared with the likes of Walter Payton and Erick Dickerson, he was quite useful as long as his abilities were utilized by pairing him with the best players in the team.

To this date, critics argue that Vikings would not have lost during the three seasons if only Lynn had not decided to transform the newly acquired walker into another player. Lynn should have allowed walker to utilize his talent as a runner and a receiver. After going through a series of defeats, Vikings fans felt cheated by Lynn's decision to give away their 5 best players.

Cowboys used their newly acquired players to up their game and soon enough they were recording victory at Super Bowl. Their Victory left Vikings with hard feelings because they knew that was their opportunity that was stolen when they agreed to buy Walker. The very same players that they had sold out were now leading Cowboys to victory.
