  • According to Dyn research on Internet activity, North Korea faced a complete outage for 9 hours straight .

The state has one internet provider called China Unicom. The outage was followed by an on and off connectivity.

Following on the internet controversy in North Korea, the country just faced a very strange occurrence of network outage from the entire country. The outage was not limited to a specific area of region where on and off connectivity is observed due to various reasons such as electricity problem, fiber optics burns and low connectivity. This was different. The whole country had an internet outage for 9 hours and 31 minutes.

As recorded by Dyn Researchers who specialize in reporting internet usage around the world. According to the company reports, the outage for such a long duration is consistent with power outages but under the circumstances, it is more consistent with an external cyber attack.

Pyongyang faced the non-connectivity as the day started and remained in non-connectivity for 9 hours. This could also be contributed to the singular provision of the Internet services by a single company i.e. China Unicom.

Other countries which are about the same size have various providers for internet connectivity, North Korea only has one. If there had been a problem with the company, it is most likely that the whole of the country faced the internet outage.

Some people are also suggesting that this may be a counter-attack by the US government following up on President Obama’s claim to get back “in a place and time and manner that we choose.”

Following the Sony Pictures hacking stunt, the FBI made allegation that North Korea was involved in the cyber-attack. They were of course denied by the North Korean government. This is an instigation of a long listing cyber dispute if the US government was involved in the Internet outage stunt.
