The episode aptly entitled ‘Connection Lost’ revolves around the character Claire Dunphy played by Julie Bowen, while she tries to find her daughter Haley, played by Sarah Hyland by using different types of modern social communication tools, from Facebook to FaceTime.
The episode is inspired by real life events of Steven Levitan, the co-creator and executive producer of Modern Family. According to Levitan the unique approach to filming the episode is the way how a majority of families of a certain class communicate nowadays.
Levitan got the inspiration from his own two college going daughters when he spent time with them on FaceTime. The film was also partly influenced by the short film ‘Noah’ that was also shot entirely on the main characters computer screen as he experiences a break up through Facebook and other messenger apps.
According to the writers and editors filming the episode was more difficult than they had anticipated. Adjusting the mobile angles on the actors while they delivered their lines was a challenge.
At first the actors tried holding the phones themselves but it ended up shooting the ceiling or floor rather than the faces of the actors. The problem was solved by giving the camera operators the mobile devices while the actors only hold the operators arm and concentrate on their lines and delivery.
