Swatch Group CEO Nick Hayek let out another bold statement after announcing a smartwatch a couple weeks ago. In a new interview published today he announces that he plans to produce batteries unmatched storage capacity.

Batteries are going to be a bigger business than ever with the advancement of electric cars. Now even the Swatch Group wants to get into that business. Swatch is not only making watches, the Swatch Group owns a variety of businesses. Swatch CEO Nick Hayek said in an interview with Swiss L'Hebdo that together with Mougahed Darwish, CEO of Belenos Clean Power he plans to make batteries unmatched storage capacity.

The new batteries are aimed to be used in electric cars. Just this week Samsung SDI announced an aquisition to bolster their car battery business and Tesla Motors is working on a giga factory for batteries. Now Swatch is entering the market as well.

Belenos Clean Power (site) is a clean energy focused company that was founded by late Nicolas G. Hayek back in 2008. In collaboration with the Federal Institute of Technology Zurich (ETH), Belenos Clean Power has developed a battery with electrical energy storage capacity is 50 to 100% higher than that existing today. The interview does not reveal any technical details on how this new battery technology works.

Belenos partners with Renata a Swiss battery maker to manufacture the new "revolutionary" battery. Nick Hajek estimates that the new Swatch batteries will be available on the market in three to four years. The Swatch Group and Renata are investing millions says Hayek.

A couple weeks ago Nick Hayek made big waves announcing the Swatch Smartwatch that would provide internet connectivity and "would not need to be charged." The Swatch Smartwatch is supposed to come around the same time the Apple Watch will be released.
