In the start of the trailer, we are introduced to the character of Joaquin Phoenix called Professor Abe, about to join a small town college as a Philosophy professor. Then Parker Posey and Emma Stone make their entrances, Parker as an old associate and Emma as a remarkable student. Emma Stone is then seen praising her professor to her mother by describing him as ‘radical’ and ‘original’ whom you can either hate or love.
Professor Abe then starts an intimate relationship with Parker and the two are seen sharing a bed. However, Joaquin starts to show how melancholic he has been of late with life. Professor Abe describes he can’t eat or write and cannot even remember the reason for living anymore and if he does the reason doesn’t seem very convincing.
Throughout the trailer, we see the student and professor pair having intimate conversations by the seaside, in a park or at a diner. At the diner, Emma confronts her teacher and tells him he is suffering from despair, and then invites him to join her in eavesdropping on an interesting conversation next table.
After that moment, Abe’s demeanour changes completely and the change brings further worry for Emma’s character. Another shot shows the professor playing Russian roulette with his terrified students at a party. In the last scene, Abe tells Emma’s character he found the meaningful act he has been searching for. The film is to be released in theaters on the 24th of July.
