  • J.Crew Sacks Lady’s Design Head and Undergoes Downsizing

J. Crew sacked its lady’s design head and underwent some downsizing to boot.

J. Crew sure knows how to shake things up. For one thing, the leading retailer has cut off many people employed among its rank and file. Then it has taken the bold step of sacking its head fashion designer in the lady’s department. Over 175 jobs will be vacated soon at the huge store. And as for Tom Mora, he will be replaced with Somsack Sikhuonmuong.

The steps taken were a bit extreme but they are also a necessary evil. For one thing the slump in sales had adversely affected the very warp and woof of the store. The consumers had been rapidly shifting their allegiances to other places such as H&M and as for the overall morale of the company, it had gone down the drain.

The need of the time was a thorough shakeup and that was exactly what took place in the end. The design element was also something that required adjustments and tweaks in order for public curiosity to be piqued in J. Crew’s favor. And so the lady’s design head was shown the pink slip and someone more competent was hauled in.

"We are making meaningful and strategic changes across our organization to better position us for future growth. While many of these decisions were difficult, they are necessary," said J.Crew Chairman and CEO Millard Drexler.

"With Somsack in his new role, we will continue to focus on making critical improvements to our J.Crew women's assortment including fit, design aesthetic and styling. We know what needs to be done and while many of these initiatives take time, we have a committed team in place to make it happen."
