Two deaths and eight infections have taken place in Florida due to Vibrio bacteria.

There have been eight Vibrio vulnifucus (flesh-eating bacteria) infections in Florida residents. And up until now two have died from the disease as well, according to Florida Department of Health. Vibrio bacterias or flesh-eating bacterias are common in the bitter and salty seawater off the Florida coast.

While the bacteria are not as dangerous to a common person (provided he or she has no open wounds or cuts), the risk is nevertheless there alright. The health department has always offered annual guidelines regarding Vibrio infections and hazards to the public. But so many warnings slip through the cracks.

Prophylaxis and underexposure are the only two main tools at the disposal of the common man or woman. The agency is always available to lend support and info in order to fight the deadly disease.

"Vibrio vulnificus infections are rare. The bacterium does not pose a risk to a normally healthy person (who does not have open cuts or wounds) who swims in Florida's coastal waters," Florida Department of Health said in a statement. .

Hundreds of thousands take to the beaches of Florida in order to enjoy the cool waves of the ocean during the hot summer months. Yet the message given out by the health department has always been to take precautions lest some harmless enjoyment turns into terrible tragedy.

With a little bit of prudence and care, there would not be any later need for a cure. The sense not to expose any lacerations or wounds to the waters is a must for those who want to avoid Vibrio infection and its concomitant complications.

There are other ways the bacteria can enter one’s biological system. And that is through contaminated food. Thus all the picnic goers will have to take care of their comestibles whether they are egg sandwiches or cherry pies.

Among some of the symptoms of the disease are: nausea and purging, loose stools and stomach cramps. And these occur when the bacteria are food-borne. It is indeed a nasty illness and the best thing would be to never get it in the first place.

The disease can also cause skin ulcers and other disfiguring effects. That is when it enters the body through a wound. All sorts of seafood ought to be cooked thoroughly before it is consumed.

If any raw shellfish is eaten it may provoke an attack. It is not just wounds or scrapes that are vulnerable to the bacteria. A compromised immune system will also invite the bacteria to attack like the worst invaders from the microscopic world.

And while antibiotics may work wonders as far as a cure is concerned, in a minority of cases limb amputation is a necessity. And some people don’t survive the disease caused by flesh-eating bacteria and simply die from its ravaging effects.
