Disney has officially started working on a potential sequel to the Angelina Jolie starring film ‘Maleficent’.
A sequel to the successful Disney film ‘Maleficent’ in officially in the works. The 2014 film ‘Maleficent’ was a live action version inspired from the story of the ‘Sleeping Beauty’ and proved to be a box office blockbuster.
‘Maleficent’ earned a worldwide gross of $760 million against a reported $180 million budget, therefore ensuring the sequel will be a sure winner at the box office domestically and internationally.
According to reports Disney is getting serious about making a sequel to ‘Maleficent’ and it isn’t just a pitching idea anymore but the studio has already hired potential people to work on the film.
Deadline report suggests Disney recently hired the screenwriter Linda Woolverton to write the sequel for ‘Maleficent’. The sequel will be written specially for Angelina Jolie to reprise her role as the titular character ‘Maleficent’. The studio Disney will also keeping Angelina Jolie in the loop through-out the writing process.
Other reports detail the ‘Maleficent’ sequel will again be produced by the previous producer Joe Roth. No news has been disclosed about the directorial chair as whether the original director Robert Stromberg will take over the reins again or a new face will be brought forth. Stromberg made his directorial debut with ‘Maleficent’ after having won an Oscar for production designing.

While Disney may see a sequel to ‘Maleficent’ as a priority convincing Jolie to return to her role may be a whole other story. Coming up with a deal where Jolie would reprise her role may be the biggest obstacle for Disney since Jolie although worked on the sequels for the films ‘Slat’ and ‘Wanted’ she did not reprise her role again.
