According to a report by Deadline, Oscar Award-winning actor Tom Hanks is in final with Warner Bros. talks to play the character of Chesley Sullenberger aka Captain Sully in upcoming biopic.
Earlier this month, the studio announced to make a film on commercial airline pilot captain Sully who suddenly became a national after landing a troubled aircraft on Hudson River in 2009. The incident is also known as “Miracle on the Hudson” since all 155 passengers on board remained safe and was successfully evacuated from the aircraft which was about to sink in the river.
The film will be based on the Sullenberger’s memoir titled “Highest Duty: My Search For What Really Matters” and will be directed by Clint Eastwood who has recently helmed a blockbuster war drama film “American Sniper” earning $547 million worldwide and becoming the highest grossing film at domestic box office in 2014.
The upcoming film will provide Clint Eastwood another opportunity to depict the story of a real-life hero. American Sniper was based on the life of Navy Seal Chris Kyle, one of the most lethal snipers in U.S. military history.
Just Like Eastwood, Tom Hanks is no stranger to dealing with the projects about real-life heroes. He has played astronaut Jim Lovell in Apollo 13 and Texas politician Charlie Wilson in 2007 biopic Charlie Wilson’s War. In fact, his last two films were biographical flick, revolving around actual characters. In “Captain Phillips”, Tom Hanks was featured as Richard Phillips, a merchant mariner and filmmaker Walt Disney in “Saving Mr. Banks.”
The inclusion of an award-winning actor like Tom Hanks will certainly make this movie standout and something to watch out for, taking into account the success he has achieved with all previous biographical films. Captain Sully Sullenberger already called the whole team which is involved in the making of the biopic a “truly dream team.”
“I am very glad my story is in the hands of gifted storyteller and filmmaker Clint Eastwood, and veteran producers Allyn Stewart and Frank Marshall. This project could not have found a better home than Warner Bros. This is truly a dream team.”
